Seniors Need A Social Life

Seniors are the reason for the trend in geriatrics social health. Now the people are living longer, they need a plan to plan! This type of study will examine the seniors and try to formulate a social agenda for them. Jazz dance, dinners which are specifically for them, bingo and other games and activities are good for keeping seniors alive. If the older person has something occupying their time, they don’t have time to think about being lonely or dying alone.  Really its about getting them to change habits that are unhealthy for them.  Many seniors would do well to add supplements that can help reduce dangerous belly fat like green coffee bean extract, and other fat burning pills.

Another plan to insure proper geriatrics social health is conducting surveys. Begin watching those seniors who have vibrant lives, and applying some of the principles observed to other social plans for seniors. Most social activities need a plan, and this doesn’t exclude younger people. The social health of a senior can depend on how much and how well they function in a social setting. If the average eighty year old is always busy, they don’t have time to think about being eighty! It just makes perfect sense to have activities carved out socially just for them so that they can live!

2

Activities like going bowling or golfing together will boost the spirits of almost any senior. Another benefit of providing geriatrics social health is that the seniors will in turn, be a bit more healthy. A healthy social life is a major depression deterrent. If the senior doesn’t know how to become a socialite, then that’s where relatives and friends come in. Plan a cookout for the senior. Invite their friends and family, their friends from church or other activities. What about attending church? Church has long been an enjoyable experience spiritually as well as socially. Attending a church service provides a conversation without even trying. Then, from that experience gather information and start the senior social circuit!

Whatever the situation or circumstance, geriatrics social health is a sincere and promising career and future for those considering a career in the area. The seniors need services and social acceptance.

Exercising Routines For The Elderly

159 geriatric workoutsOne solution in keeping the body healthy, fit, and kicking until we are older, is to exercise, partnered up with a balanced diet. Exercising, as what has repeatedly been told to us ever since, can help us reap a lot of benefits for our body, physically and psychology. It can help us avoid diseases such as cardiovascular diseases including heart disease and stroke. It can also help us in maintaining our weights, losing unwanted and unhealthy fats stored in our body. Thus, can also help us avoid diabetes, high blood pressure, and so on. There are a lot of benefits in exercising.

However, as we grow older, our body can also become frail and prone to diseases. The usual workout or exercise routines that we may have had before when we were in our youth or in our middle age years might be too difficult for a 70 years old and up body.  However, it should not be a hindrance rather a motivation to make the body stronger, more flexible, and not easily susceptible to illness and pain. One’s age should not be a hindrance to still be active. On the other hand though, as the owner of a 70 year old or up body, you must also be conscious to what your body can only handle. Exercise routines should not be too difficult for your body to handle nor too immobile that it does not make sense anymore why you are doing those routines when it does not do much at all to improve your body. According to experts, at old age, one can identify that the routines are too difficult for you to handle if while doing those routines, you cannot talk anymore. One should avoid doing so. Instead of helping your body avoid pain, you are inflicting more pain.

Nowadays, there is a specific kind of exercise routines that are especially good for the elderly. It is called the geriatric workouts. Basically geriatric workouts are simple, not too difficult for the body to handle. According to some people, some exercises that should be included in someone’s geriatrics workout routines contain water aerobics and sports, cardio exercises, and weigh bearing exercises. Weigh bearing exercises can help one in building his or her muscles as well as it can strengthen the connective tissues that are found surrounding the bones and the muscles in his or her body. Lifting weights and strength training should not cause pain to the body nor should it cause excessive soreness, though. Its main purpose is to maintain the strength of your body, not totally lose it. Cardio exercise is good for the body too, the heart in particular as well as in the overall well-being of the person by helping the brain release endorphin, a hormone responsible for that.

One should not stop being active just because he or she thinks that his or her body is old enough to handle even simple geriatric workouts. Exercise is not something that should be stopped at old age; rather it should be a part of our lifestyle until the end.

3 Factors Affecting Geriatrics Social Health

130 geriatrics social healthOne of the age groups that needs to be paid more attention is the older adults, aging sixty five and above. They are our elderly, our senior citizens, and our old people who have given large contributions to the society, to the country and to the world. They were once as young as we are but have now reached the age wherein they experience major changes in life. These changes affect not only their physical and mental health but also their social health. The following are some of the factors that can play a huge influence on geriatrics social health.

1. Retirement

Most people treat their job as their life. Studies show that many employees spend more time in the office than at home. It is a source of joy and self-fulfillment for them. That is why some elderly people feel like they have been deprived of the happiness their work brings to them because of retirement. A person’s opinion about retirement may differ from that of another. Some may look at it as a start of a new life while some may think that they were robbed of their responsibilities which may leave them feeling useless. Because of the loss of their jobs, they will also experience a reduction in their incomes which may have an impact on their social activities and roles.

2. Death

Death of a loved one is the worst thing to go through and the elderly has experienced these, probably multiple times. They might feel like they do not belong to anyone anymore and that all of their loved ones have left them alone. This can further lead to limited interaction with the people around them and worse, to social isolation and depression. Some may even commit suicide and others may develop serious medical conditions.

3. Change of Residence

What most elderly do after retirement is to move to another place. It could be a care facility or a smaller apartment to avoid the burden of maintaining a larger house. However, the move may either positively or negatively affect their social health. Some may live by themselves and feel lonely or depressed. They might develop unhealthy behaviors because of the change in their environment and the feeling of loss of control over what is happening to their lives. This is especially true if they moved to a neighborhood which is completely new to them and to where they have no on to relate to.

These are the three major factors that can affect geriatrics social health. Fortunately, the government and social welfare offices are finding effective and efficient ways to address these concerns of our older people.

Giving Back To The Elderly Through Geriatrics Social Health Programs

Most developed countries’ populations these days are composed largely of elderly people. There has been an increasing rate of people aging from 65 and above in these countries. Numerous homes for the aged have been established because of this.  Governments have developed programs and services to address the concerns and needs of the elderly and the aged. Geriatrics social health is the health sector responsible for taking care of the welfare of these people.

196 geriatrics social health

Older people experience challenges in life brought about by aging. These can be physical, social, cultural, environmental or personal challenges. Some of them may feel lonely or depressed because of certain factors. It can be that they feel alone because their children or relatives have their own families already or it can also be that they feel that they have not achieved self- fulfillment yet or have not lived out their purpose here in the world. Also, most of them are suffering from illnesses because of their age. That is why it is important that these complex needs of our elderly must be addressed.

Geriatrics social health involves numerous assistance programs and services devised for this sector of the population. There are what we call geriatrics social health workers who help the aged improve the quality of their lives and face the challenges brought about by their age. Not only they do help the elderly but also their families in availing of the services offered by the government specifically for them. Geriatrics social health workers’ goal is to make the older people stay active, independent and in the best health condition possible. They facilitate therapies for those who are experiencing depression and anxiety so that they will know how to cope with the negative feelings and thoughts that they have. There are also group activities wherein older people can interact with each other and make friends which will lessen their feeling of loneliness. Counseling sessions are also done to deal with the concerns and fears that they have.

The older sector of the population was largely responsible for who we are and what we have now. They have contributed to growth of the economy and of the world. They were once like us but are now in the last years of their lives. It is then our responsibility to take care of them, and help them live a quality life. It is now our time to give back and thank them for what they have done for our generation and for the generations to come.

How Does New York Address Geriatrics Mental Health?

As we grow older, wrinkles start to appear and our hair turns gray. As old age hits us, health problems go along with it. And we know that our immune system is not as strong as before making us vulnerable to illnesses.

163 geriatrics mental health

Illnesses like osteoarthritis which causes pain, swelling, and reduced motion in the joints. It is also the most common form of arthritis. Older people are also prone to heart attacks, heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.

Alzheimer is the most common and prevalent disease experienced by older people.  It is the most common form of dementia and it first involves the part of the brain that controls our memory, language and thought. People with this disease tend to forget the things that happened recently or even have trouble in remembering the names of people they know.

Recently, United States faced shortage of caregivers due to the aging baby boomers generation. Baby boomers generation refers to those who were born after the war between 1946 and 1964. Last 2011 the first post war baby boom generation turned 65, and this occurrence will likely to double the number of older adults in the US.

The doubling number of older adults results to the shortage of caregivers and health care services for these older people. As an answer to this problem New York State enacted the Geriatric Mental Health Act last August 23, 2005. The law took effect last April 1, 2006 and authorized the establishment of an Interagency Geriatric Mental Health Planning Council, a geriatric service demonstration program and a requirement for an annual report to the Governor and Legislator.

As cited from The Geriatric Mental Alliance of New York, the purpose of the bill is to lay the foundation for New York State to be able to provide the older adults and prepare them for the coming of elder boom through innovative, high quality, and integrated services that can meet their current mental needs.

As part of the implementation of The Geriatric Mental Health Act it called for the Office of Mental Health or the OMH to create a geriatric service demonstration program that will provide grants to the providers of mental health care for the elderly. In cooperation with the Office for the Aging and with other State Agencies, the program of Office of Mental Health can give grants to areas of community integration, integration of services, workforce, and family support, improved quality of treatment, finance, staff training, information clearinghouse and specialized populations.

Thanks to this bill that older adults in US are not anymore afraid to face aging.

3 Tips To A Successful Geriatric Diet

084 geriatics dietAs we age, our physiological and body requirements also vary. One form of these changes takes in the form of the foods that we eat. Entering the stage of senior adulthood signifies that there are adjustments that we need to undertake when it comes to our food choices. We have to be extra conscious in ensuring that the things we buy shall give us the nutrients and minerals required to keep us healthy and well. No longer are the carefree years when we can eat all the kinds of food that we can wherever we want.

As reported by the American Dietetic Association, the energy needs of older people vary depending on internal factors like sex, age and level of activity. For geriatrics which has low level of activities, averages of 1600 to 2000 calories are needed daily. On the other hand, older people who engage themselves in moderate and high levels of activities need 1,800 to 2,800 calories every day. To ensure that your body gets the minerals and vitamins that it needs to keep on going, here are useful tips that you can keep while going on a geriatrics diet.

Eat foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals.

As we grow older, our immune system also weakens. This makes us more prone to different kinds of diseases. These illnesses stress our body and deprive us of nutrients that we need for our body to function well. To prevent being malnourished, it is wise to constantly replenish our bodies with foods rich in vitamins and minerals.

Exercise, Vitamin D and Calcium are three important things in making our bones healthy. Food products like cheese, yogurt,  low-fat milk and broccoli are rich in calcium. Sunlight is also a good source of Vitamin D. This vitamin is crucial especially in the absorption of essential nutrients like calcium and phosphorous. To strengthen your immune system, try eating foods rich in vitamin B6, zinc and Vitamin E.

Drink lots of water.

Older people often take for granted drinking lots of water. They are, therefore, prone to getting dehydrated. Consuming an average of ten to twelve glasses of water reduce our risk of getting kidney problems. Lots of fluid intake also helps in easing digestive problems like constipation. As older people lose their ability to know if they are thirsty or not, it is crucial to drink water from time to time.

Avoid sweet, salty and fatty foods.

Discipline is needed in maintaining your body’s health and wellbeing. Eating foods rich in cholesterol, trans fat and saturated fats increase the possibility of getting cardiovascular diseases like stroke, coronary heart disease and hypertension.

Aging and growing old are inevitable. There will come a time when our body will not function as good as it used to be. These geriatric diets tips can help you in your goal of living well and healthy. Live your life to the fullest by taking extra good care of your nutritional needs.

Geriatrics For Best Elderly Care

090 geriatricsWhen you are getting older each day, you become prone to various health problems. You might even think of getting a few geriatrics services. This is a specific area in medicine who takes charge of elderly patients. Its goal is to provide the best care to our elderly people and treat illnesses that they may encounter. The physician is called a geriatrician. One won’t be given the chance to serve the elders without completing a degree in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine. The diploma is not even enough because we need competent professionals with at least 1 or 2 years of exclusive trainings. If you choose this area of specialty, you need more patience.

As the population for aged members increase, the demand for the job is also increasing. This field is concern of the overall health and welfare of the aged as they are the ones being left or ignored. Some of them don’t have families to take care of them. That’s why they are force to work even if it’s hard for them. Our senior citizens are important members of the family. They are the reasons why we exist. So, will it just to provide them the best care? If children do have excellent pediatrician who look after their needs, our seniors do have geriatrician who knows what do the elder needs to have a better life.  They don’t go after the economic status wherein the well-off seniors are served and the poor ignored. Services are given equally.

Geriatrics goes beyond treatment of health problems associated with old age. Usually, adults are prone to memory loss, rheumatism, arthritis, eye defects, osteoporosis, mobility, and Alzheimer’s disease. Clearly, geriatric professionals address such problems. There will be tests to determine how severe the problem is so right cure can be given. They gather information about the patient’s family, lifestyle, community, and the medical history. We should not complaint whenever we hear our elders talking about what they feel. Rather, give them something to ease the pain. Refer to a geriatric expert.

Aside from an expert geriatrician, other members of the geriatrics team include physical therapists, nurses, nutritionists, and pharmacists. These professions are all demanding. Given the fact that aged patients react differently when they are sick, these various professionals need enough trainings or exposure so they can do the job. Senior members of the family should not be taken for granted. They need the best care. Adult care is one of the toughest things to do but it’s so rewarding.

Components Of Geriatics Diet

1Nutritional needs for aged adults are different from those required by the younger ones. This is because as one grows older, the body’s anatomy and physiology changes. In response to this, there is increased preference for foods that can be easily digested and increase the performance of the body. When this condition arises, the best thing to do is to make geriatics diet available.

The first need you may consider for older adults is food with sufficient calories. Old age comes with weakness so there is need for foods that can give strength and prevent muscle loss. According to the American Dietetic Association, older adults need about 1,600 to 2,800 calories every day. An adult can take as much as 2,800 calories if he or she has a daily routine that demands so much energy.

Protein is another nutrient that must be provided in their diets. Sufficient protein will prevent edema, fatigue and muscle weakness. Protein foods that can form part of their meals include beans, fish, nuts and eggs. Aged adults should not take red meat because it contains cholesterol. Alternatively, they can take lean meat or poultry foods such as chicken.

Since they are more prone to diseases, they need adequate consumption of vitamins and minerals. Some of their special needs include calcium, vitamin B 12 and vitamin D for strong bones. Sources of vitamin D include low-fat dairy, dark green vegetables and fortified cereals. You can add other elements like chromium and supplements talked about at weightlosspunch.com a weight loss blog designed for all kinds of people.

The best way to be sure you are not missing out any of the essentials in a geriatics diet is by seeking the help of a dietitian. You will also need a doctor’s report to help the dietitian prepare a healthy diet plan. This may require hard work but it shouldn’t be a problem especially if you still want your aged adult to live longer.
